Jason's Argo
FORGED FOR A HERO AND A KING - Jasons Argo the Sword of Jason. No single legend of Greek Mythology has endured the annals of time like the heroic tales of Jason and his Argonauts and their quest for the Golden Fleece.
The story follows Jason, a young man who is the rightful King of Thessaly, who was raised in exile by a usurper. To regain his kingdom, the gods of Olympus send him on a voyage to the actual edge of the Earth to bring back the legendary Golden Fleece.
Researching through various historical documents, the makers designed the Argo directly from the Greek swords of this time period. Its leaf-shaped blade and short imposing stature, was a standard design used by the majority of Greek armorers.
Many of the perils and rewards which Jason and his crew encountered have been beautifully captured on this striking sword. The cross guard is a branch of a tree, on which hangs the ultimate prize, the skull and hide of the Golden Fleece. The pommel is the trident of Triton, Lord of the Deep. It was he who allowed Jason's ship to safely traverse the deadly clashing cliffs. This kingly blade would have most likely been presented to Jason upon his triumphant return. Now this sword can be yours to possess through time memoriam.
An ambitious project to recreate the "Argo", the ship that Jason and his legendary Argonauts used in their quest for the Golden Fleece, is to begin in the coastal city of Volos on Saturday.
At a special event beginning at 10:00 at the Spirer building in Volos, there will be the first public briefing on a full-scale experimental archaeology project to rebuild a 1500-BC galley, conducted by a scientific research team specialising in such reconstructions with the aid of the Volos Municipal Tourism Enterprise.
When completed, the reconstructed model will conduct an experimental voyage, following the route of its legendary predecessor.
